KATHON (Isothiazolinone) Microbicide Test Kit, 0-7.5 mg/L,

The new KATHON™ Microbicide test kit enables the rapid and accurate measurement of active microbicide in a range of industrial cooling water applications. The test can be performed on-site at the cooling tower, eliminating the requirement to return the sample to a laboratory for evaluation. The KATHON™ kit has been designed to be simple and easily used by operators regardless of their experience. Isothiazolinones are sometimes erroneously called isothiazolines.

Chemical Identification
The active ingredients of KATHON CG preservative are two isothiazolinones, identified by the IUPAC system of nomenclature as: 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one
and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one.

Thus, the words isothiazolinone, isothiazolin, and Kathon are often used inter changably.

Kathon is the Dow Brand name.
Their product is a blend of two isothiazolinones.
And isothiazolin is actually part of an IUPAC Chemical Name which technically should not be used. But it is, and is thus more like a Nick Name.

IUPAC stands for International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists. They are responsible for using the Chemical Nomenclature (or rules) to assign a correct chemical names to chemicals. Sometimes there can be a contradiction in those naming rules. If this happens they are responsible for clarifying the rules or rewriting portions of the rule and obtaining an International consensus on the rule or rule change. IUPAC names insure that Chemists all around the world understand EXACTLY which chemical they are discusing.
